What is the fee and what does it include?

The current fee for applications is £500, payable when you submit your application.

The fee covers the cost assessing applications, which can take between three and four hours for each accreditor to do, with each application being assessed by at least two, and sometimes three, independent accreditors.

All applicants, whether they are successful or not, receive highly detailed feedback on their application, with tips for how they might improve their practice, and a line-by-line commentary on the transcript of the session they have submitted.

Unsuccessful applicants are entitled to submit one further application, at no extra cost, if they submit within 12 months of receiving the outcome of their first application.

 How do I apply?

In order to apply, you must be a current member of the UKASFP.

If you are not currently a member and would like to join now, you can find membership details on this page .

Current members who wish to apply will need to provide the accreditors with the following:

  • a shareable link to a video (or, if that’s not possible, audio) recording of an initial solution-focused conversation with someone genuinely seeking your help, lasting between 30 and 60 minutes. The accreditors recommend using the facility on YouTube to upload your session as an unlisted video. This generates a link that can be shared with the accreditors and you are in control of deleting the recording, if you wish, once your assessment is complete. If you prefer to use other means of sharing a link with the accreditors: it is your responsibility to come up with a way of doing that that meets your, or your organisation’s standards of security and confidentiality;
  • an accurate verbatim transcript, in Word , ideally in the format of the extract shown below:

Accreditation application from:  applicant name &  date

Practitioner: (P)  So, what are your best hopes from us talking together this evening if it’s useful for you?

Client (C): I – I’m really struggling to get motivated, so I would like to feel like I can get up and do a couple of things in the day

C: I can sort of do the things that I have on my list to do, that I’ve been putting off for ages – for weeks and weeks.

P: Okay.

C: That I’m just really struggling to do at the moment.

P: Oh okay. So, if you were feeling more motivated, what are some of the things you’d be doing that you’d be pleased with?

  • a brief statement (which can be included in an email, sent in a separate file, or added to the same Word file as the transcript) setting out the context of the session (e.g. the nature of your service, or whether recorded with a friend/colleague, etc) and confirming that consent has been obtained to share the recording and transcript with the UKASFP.

How will my application be assessed?

Your recording and transcript will be sent initially to two of the current pool of accreditors (the names of whom are listed below), each of whom will independently assess whether it meets each of the  accreditation criteria, which are set out in detail here . They will do this using both the recording and the transcript of your session, with the latter being used to add a line-by-line commentary, documenting where there is evidence for each of the criteria being met, or where opportunities may have been missed to provide this.

Once both accreditors have independently reached a conclusion as to whether or not the work you have submitted Is accreditable, they will compare notes to see if they are in agreement. If they are, one of the accreditors will then take the lead in drafting feedback for you, based on the transcript comments and assessments of both accreditors. If the initial two accreditors disagree in their independent assessments, and this disagreement cannot be resolved through discussion between them, a third accreditor will be asked to independently assess the session in order to arrive at a  2:1 majority in favour of either passing or failing the session.

Please note that the current first-time pass rate for accreditation applications is around 45%: our standards are set very high and it is therefore worth investing time in making sure you fully understand the criteria and feel confident that your practice is able to fulfil these criteria.

What training and advice is available to help me?

  • If you are not yet a member of the UKASFP, you can still access and download the accreditation criteria  here

  • For current UKASFP members, there is a range of supporting resources and documents on a members-only are of the website, which can be found hereYou will need to be logged in to access this page, which includes:

videos and audio recording of sample sessions that meet the criteria

                                accompanying transcripts with accreditor commentary

examples of the feedback provided to applicants

  • The UKASFP cannot give recommendations for specific courses or trainers: we know that there are a great many excellent SF trainers out there and we don’t have the means to review them all in terms of how well they prepare their delegates for accreditation. However, we do plan to invite Accredited Members(names listed below) to provide a short statement for the website, giving their own tips for reaching the accreditation standard, and mentioning any key learning resources they found useful in doing this.

I want to apply now – what shall I do?

Please email us at admin@ukasfp.org letting us know you are ready to go! One of us  will then get in touch with you very soon to make arrangements for payment and transfer of files.
