What is Solution Focus?

'Solution Focused Practice' is an approach to working with individuals, couples, groups, and organisations based on the work of Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg at the Brief Family Therapy Centre, Milwaukee, in the 1980's.

A key early publication is Steve de Shazer's book Clues: Investigating Solutions in Brief Therapy (1988).

The term 'Solution Focused Brief Therapy' continues to be used in the therapy world, but as the model has developed and extended it's application into coaching (individual and team), education, health, management and organisational consulting, the more general term 'Solution Focused Practice' has come into popular use.

Solution Focused Practice is an evidence-based approach. The European Brief Therapy Association (EBTA) hosts an SF Publictions List, originally initiated by Dr Alastair MacDonald.

For further information, you may read the page on Solution Focused Brief Therapy on this site, and listen to our podcast What is Solution Focused Practice? with Guy Shennan.

Solution Focused Practice continues to develop. You may also wish to listen to Dr. Mark McKergow discussing Solution Focused Brief Therapy 2.0 . Mark has also written an article on this issue which is available here.
