Creating possibilities for change through conversations about prescribed medicines Thursday 17th July, 10.45, room 1.17
Helena Rose is a clinical psychologist and systemic psychotherapist at an inpatient mental health rehabilitation centre in Leeds. Rob Edwards is a nurse consultant in a community mental health team in Doncaster. They have previously worked together at Aspire early intervention in psychosis service in Leeds. Helena has worked in NHS and third-sector health and social care services for 18 years. She is involved in the training and supervision of clinical psychologists and family therapists across the UK. Rob has been a mental health nurse for 20 years, working across a range of community services including the NHS and third-sector. He has also been involved in undergraduate nurse teaching. They share a commitment to innovating beyond conventional disciplinary boundaries. We will share some conversational practices developed alongside the people we work with about their experiences of prescribed psychiatric medicines such as anti-psychotics and anti-depressants. These medications can bring about many harmful effects, yet they may also “… bring a range of new possibilities for action” (White, 1995). In practice, we often grapple with conflicting professional views on medication which can constrain our conversations with those we meet with. We hope to subvert these dilemmas in order to create a foundation for more useful conversations about people's relationships with medication. In this workshop, we aim to:
