Jenny Fraser-Smith
A Solution Focused approach to meetings involving young people
Dr Jen Fraser-Smith is an Area Principal Educational Psychologist in Highland Council Psychological Service, Scotland. The Psychological Services takes a Solution Focused approach to service delivery, which includes consultation, coaching and supervision. Jen has expertise in developing and delivering professional development courses in Solution Focused practice. Her research has explored the participation of children and young people in decision-making at meetings. Jenny.Fraser-Smith@highland.gov.uk In this workshop, I will provide the legal and policy context for which children and young people’s additional support needs (ASN) are recognised in Scotland. Multiagency meetings are a forum where the planning and review of support for these ASNs occur. A Solution Focused approach has been adopted for these meetings in Highland (Alexander & Sked, 2010). I will discuss the changing practice observed over the last 20 years and offer a comparison of problem focused and solution focused principles impacting the outcome of meetings which illustrates doing more with less. I will conclude with an outline of a quality improvement project. Participants can expect to come away with a detailed analysis of the format adopted in Highland for multiagency Solution Focused meetings. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the development of a fidelity measure for Solution Focused meetings.
